how to draw a submarine that looks solid and real
Learning how to draw a submarine is actually not that difficult. Indeed, the shape of the object is rather unique, but also mostly based on simple shapes. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create this watercraft using curved lines and digital effects in just a few steps.
This vehicle is quite fascinating since it can remain submerged for a long period of time (up to three months). Not only are they used for military purposes, but submarines can also be used for tourism or archaeology. Ready to draw? Great! Let's proceed with the first step now ...
drawing the cartoon submarine using curved lines
First, let's draw the silhouette of the vehicle. The submarine's hull is made from two long curved lines. The rear of the clipart submarine is pointed while the front is rounder. Notice the little bump near the bottom (on the left). Next, you can sketch the conning tower using more curved lines.
On top of the tower, draw two thin rectangles that are used to illustrate the antenna and the periscope. A small oval shape is drawn near the bottom of the object. Sails are sketched on the tower and near the rear of the cartoon submarine. You can also draw a propeller using a simple rectangle (since we can see it from a side view).
working with colors and gradients
This watercraft is mostly filled with gray colors. Using gradients can help create some depth inside the illustration as you can see below. Indeed, the bottom of the hull is slightly darker than the top. The antenna, the periscope and the sails can be filled using a darker version of the same color.
drawing simple textures using lines and dots
We can draw simple textures on the vehicle using long curved lines with pointed ends. These lines are added on top of the tower and inside the hull. Screws are also drawn on this part of the subject using only small dots filled with a dark gray color.
creating effective shadows
Let's create more depth inside the object using new darker shapes. To make sure that the result is realistic and visually appealing, you can also add transparency to these new shapes.
You can draw new shadows below the sails, near the bottom of the tower and on the bottom of the hull. You can see all new additions below (surrounded by a temporary blue outline).
Let's make it shine!
Since submarines are mostly made of metal (or at least a shiny material), it can be a good idea to create reflections and highlights using brighter shapes. These new elements are colored in white and can also be partially transparent. In this step, all new shapes are almost invisible near the bottom. You can draw highlights on the tower, the hull, the sails and the propeller.
Nice work learning how to draw a submarine
I hope you had fun learning how to draw a submarine like the one depicted here. Remember that you can draw more versions of this vehicle using different colors, patterns and shapes. Many models are available for you to explore. You can se this lesson as a starting point and adapt all tips to create new watercrafts. Just be creative!
Above, you can see all steps needed to complete this lesson grouped inside a single illustration. Now that this lesson on how to draw a cartoon submarine is over, don't hesitate to try more vehicles from the same series here. A lot of options are available! Enjoy! :)
